Do I need a cookie banner? Get a clear answer.

You need a cookie banner if your website uses anything that isn’t strictly necessary: analytics, ad pixels, YouTube, many chat widgets. Tick what your site uses and see yes or no, which consent categories you need, and why. Based on EU ePrivacy rules and the Danish cookie order. Guidance, not legal advice.

My website uses…

Yesyou need a consent banner

Consent categories to offer

  • Statistics
  • Marketing

Why

  • Analytics sets cookies to count and recognise visitors. Not strictly necessary, and not exempt in Denmark.
  • Embeds load the provider’s own cookies and scripts as the page opens. Block them, or show a click-to-load placeholder, until consent.

Your banner must

  • block these scripts until the visitor accepts
  • make “Decline” as easy as “Accept”
  • use no pre-ticked boxes
  • let visitors change their choice later

Guidance based on EU ePrivacy, GDPR and the Danish cookie order. Not legal advice.

How to check your website

  1. List what runs on your site: analytics, ad pixels, embedded videos or maps, a chat widget, a login or basket.
  2. Tick each one in the checker above.
  3. Read the answer: yes or no, and which categories to offer: statistics, marketing, preferences.
  4. Read why each tick needs consent, and check your banner against the rules underneath.

Analytics is not exempt in Denmark

Some countries allow a narrow exemption for privacy-friendly audience measurement. Danish guidance doesn’t rely on it: statistics cookies, Google Analytics included, need consent. Want to measure without a banner? Use cookieless analytics that stores nothing on the device and doesn’t identify visitors.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Google Analytics sets statistics cookies. They aren’t strictly necessary, so you need consent before it loads.

Yes, in practice. A YouTube or Google Maps embed loads the provider’s cookies and scripts as soon as the page opens. Load it only after consent, or show a placeholder the visitor clicks first.

Not for the form itself. A form doesn’t need cookies. You still need a privacy notice under GDPR explaining what you do with the messages people send.

The Danish Agency for Digitisation (Digitaliseringsstyrelsen) supervises the cookie order. Datatilsynet supervises GDPR, which applies when cookies collect personal data.
