How much does a website cost? The short answer
A simple five-page website for a small business typically costs DKK 12,000–30,000 from a freelancer and DKK 35,000–90,000 from an agency. Add DKK 5,000–30,000 a year to host and maintain it. With a website builder there’s no build fee (you spend your own time instead), plus a yearly subscription.
All prices are excluding VAT. Not VAT-registered? Add 25%.
How to use the calculator
It takes a minute, and every figure updates as you go.
- Type the number of pages: home, services, about, contact and so on.
- Tick what the site needs: a blog, online booking, a web shop, help writing the texts.
- Pick who builds it: a freelancer, an agency or Striive, where you do it yourself.
- Read the first-year cost, then compare build, yearly running, first-year and three-year totals side by side.
Example: a five-page site with a blog
This is the calculator’s starting point, for a typical small business excluding VAT:
- Freelancer: DKK 19,000–54,000 in the first year, DKK 29,000–85,000 over three years.
- Agency: DKK 52,000–144,000 in the first year, DKK 70,000–212,000 over three years.
- Striive: no build fee, DKK 2,500–3,500 a year excluding VAT, including a domain, plus about 9–18 hours of your own time.
What drives the price of a website
How many pages, and whether each is designed from scratch. A web shop is the biggest jump: products, payments, shipping and terms add weeks of work. Booking, a blog and more languages each add setup. And copywriting is easy to forget. If the agency writes your texts, that’s its own line on the quote.
Hourly rates in Denmark run roughly DKK 500–900 for freelancers and DKK 900–1,400 for agencies. The calculator’s ranges come from those rates and typical hours.
The running costs people forget
You don’t pay for a website just once. Hosting and a domain cost DKK 1,000–6,000 a year. A WordPress site needs updates to its core, theme and plugins, and premium plugins carry yearly licences. Most freelancers and agencies offer a service agreement for it, from a few thousand to over DKK 20,000 a year.
Over three years, running it often costs as much as building it. Or more.
Common mistakes when you budget
- Comparing build prices only. Compare the three-year total instead.
- Mixing prices with and without VAT. Agencies usually quote excluding VAT.
- Forgetting the texts. Someone has to write them: you or the agency.
- Accepting an open hourly estimate. Ask for a fixed price in writing.
How we estimated
Build ranges assume a theme- or template-based design from a freelancer and a custom design from an agency, with extra pages, blog, booking, shop and copywriting priced as add-ons. Running costs assume WordPress-style hosting, licences and a service agreement. Striive is DKK 311.25 a month including VAT (DKK 249 excluding VAT) or DKK 3,112.50 a year including VAT (DKK 2,490 excluding VAT) paid yearly. Booking and online payments aren’t in Striive yet, so if you tick them, a separate booking or shop tool is included. When they arrive, booking is in the price, and payments your customers make through Striive carry a 1.5% platform fee on top of Stripe’s own fee. Your quotes may land outside these ranges, so ask for a fixed price in writing.
