What is a favicon?

A favicon is the small icon that represents your website: in the browser tab, in bookmarks, on a phone’s home screen and next to your result in Google. Without one, visitors see a blank grey page icon, and your site looks unfinished.

How to make a favicon

  1. Choose what to start from: a letter or an image.
  2. For a letter, type one or two characters and pick a background colour and a letter colour.
  3. For an image, choose a PNG, JPG or SVG. Square works best, at least 512×512 pixels. Non-square images are cropped to the centre.
  4. Pick a shape: square, rounded or circle.
  5. Check the preview at 16, 32, 48 and 180 pixels. The 16px one is what people see in a row of tabs.
  6. Click “Download all”, or download the files one by one, and copy the HTML tags.

Which favicon sizes do you need?

Fewer than most guides say. The generator makes exactly these files:

  • favicon.ico, with 16, 32 and 48 pixel images inside, for browser tabs and older software.
  • favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png and favicon-48x48.png: the same sizes as PNG.
  • apple-touch-icon.png at 180×180, used when someone adds your site to an iPhone home screen.
  • android-chrome-192x192.png and android-chrome-512x512.png, for Android and installable web apps.
  • site.webmanifest: the small file that lists the 192 and 512 pixel icons.

How to add a favicon to your website

  1. Upload the files to the root of your site, so favicon.ico sits at yourdomain.dk/favicon.ico.
  2. Paste the link tags into the <head> of every page. Browsers look for /favicon.ico on their own; the tags make the larger sizes available too.
  3. Open yourdomain.dk/favicon.ico in your browser to check that the file is there.

Favicons in Google search results

Google shows your favicon next to your search result. It has to be square, linked from your home page and crawlable by Google. The minimum is 8×8 pixels, but Google recommends larger than 48×48 so it looks sharp. The 48px PNG and larger sizes here cover that. After a change, it can take days or weeks to update.

Common favicon mistakes

  • A full logo with a wordmark. It turns to mush at 16 pixels. Use the symbol, or one letter on a solid colour.
  • Low contrast. A pale letter on a pale background disappears in a row of tabs. High contrast and a simple shape read best.
  • A non-square image. It gets squashed or cropped. Crop it square yourself, so you decide what stays.
  • Forgetting the cache. Browsers hold on to favicons for a long time. Changed yours and still see the old one? Open the icon’s address directly, or try a private window.

Frequently asked questions

Make it square, and provide several sizes: 16, 32 and 48 pixels for browsers, 180 for Apple devices, and 192 and 512 for Android. This generator makes all of them from one image.

It is still the safest fallback: browsers ask for /favicon.ico automatically, and some tools only read that file. The PNG sizes cover the rest.

Google needs a square, crawlable favicon linked from your home page. It recommends larger than 48×48 pixels. After a change, it can take days or weeks to update.

Your browser has cached it. Open the icon’s address directly, or check in a private window. Visitors see the new one once their cache expires.

No. The favicons are drawn with your browser’s canvas and saved straight to your computer.
