What is LocalBusiness schema?
Structured data is a small block of code that states facts about a page in a format search engines understand without guessing. LocalBusiness is the schema.org type for a business with a physical place customers visit, or a local service area: a bakery, a salon, a dentist, a garage.
It spells out your name, address, phone, opening hours and website, so Google, Bing and AI assistants read them correctly, instead of scraping them from a footer, possibly wrong.
How to add local business schema to your website
- Pick your business type, and fill in name, website, phone and address. Use the international phone format, like +45 12 34 56 78.
- Set the opening hours for each day, or tick “Closed”. Days with the same hours are grouped automatically.
- Add the optional fields if you have them: e-mail, price range, logo, a photo, coordinates.
- Copy the JSON-LD block and paste it into the <head> of your home page, or the page about the business.
- Test the page with Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator.
Pick the most specific type
schema.org has hundreds of subtypes of LocalBusiness. Use the most specific one that fits: Bakery rather than FoodEstablishment, HairSalon rather than LocalBusiness. If nothing fits, plain LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService is fine.
Example: what the markup contains
For a bakery in Aarhus, the block says, in code:
- @type: Bakery, the kind of business
- name, url and telephone
- address: street, postal code, city and country code (DK)
- openingHoursSpecification: Monday to Friday 07:00–17:30, Saturday 07:00–14:00
Where it goes, and how to test it
One block per location: a business with two shops gets a page and a block for each.
The details must match what visitors see on the page. Structured data that contradicts the page can be ignored.
Does schema markup help me rank?
Structured data is not a ranking boost on its own. What it does is remove doubt: correct hours, the right phone number and a clear business type help your listing, your Google Business Profile and AI answers agree. Keep your Business Profile and the markup in sync.
Common mistakes
- Opening hours in the markup that differ from the ones on the page or in your Business Profile.
- A phone number without +45, or a relative logo address instead of a full https:// one.
- Plain LocalBusiness when a more specific type fits.
- One block listing several shops instead of one per location.
Frequently asked questions
Google recommends JSON-LD. It sits in one block, separate from your HTML, so a redesign can’t break it by accident.
Use the closing time as it reads on the clock, e.g. opens 18:00, closes 02:00. Open around the clock? Use opens 00:00 and closes 23:59.
No. Latitude and longitude are optional; a complete street address is enough for search engines to place you. Add them if your address is hard to find on a map.
Run the page through Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator. Both show the data they found and any errors.
